I’ve tried to watch the remake twice now, I’m sure it’s fine, but there is none of the impact of the original in the first episode. In the original, you see Nikita’s life as a street urchin, then you see how it ends, in a sequence with no dialogue. In the remake, you get a deadpan voiceover of Nikita giving exposition over her typing on a laptop. Even describing the two openers doesn’t compare.

La Femme Nikita is a gem that should not go lost to television history. Not perfect, of course, but also allowing a strong female lead to be sexy badass while generally wearing actual clothing, and put forth some hard questions about the ethics of maintaining world peace in a time when cause-driven violence is increasingly the work of terrorists and private individuals instead of armies or governments. The enemy is a relative concept. How far do the means have to go before the ends justify them? All that fun stuff.

Nikita is right there next to Xena, and if she isn’t for you, well. You should go see what you missed back in the day.

You do care, you made this a Thing in the first place. If it’s not insulting to the character, and you do not even know that you are correct, why did you make the statement in the first place?

Him being presented as a sociopath that is not vilified by the writer and audience after admitting it is what you’re taking issue with. So you’re saying that being a sociopath is something shameful and wrong. And that’s offensive.

I’m sorry, I’m clearly not expressing myself very well, because the conclusions you’re pulling from what I say seem utterly bizarre to me.

I do not care about the character, is what I said. I really, truly, do not give two shits about Sherlock “as a person/character,” as portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, as written by Moffat; I do not care if he is insulted; I am not insulted by insults to him. I guess I “care” just barely enough to form an opinion about the correlation between his actions and the diagnostic criteria for sociopathy. I have no emotional investment, is what I’m trying to say.

“Why did I make the statement in the first place if I wasn’t even sure I was correct?” I should think it’s obvious that I was sure that I was, objectively, correct. I still don’t interpret him as a sociopath, but I have now reconsidered that this is a subjective opinion, and others’ can be just as valid. (I have not previously run into anyone who A) could articulate any reason he might be a sociopath beyond “he said so and is kind of a jerk” B) was actually deeply invested in that interpretation, so I’ve never found need to reconsider before.) So maybe you’re right; I shouldn’t have made that particular post. I apologize.

That aside: I do care about the attitudes surrounding said character, in the fandom, in society. Because I see posts about him all the time on my dash with the strangest opinions attached. And I’m sorry, I really and truly meant to clearly show that I do not think sociopathy “should be vilified.” That is not my problem. My persisting problem is with people who I have actually seen doing the following things:

A) treating mental disorders like an exciting unique interesting rebellious edgy new fad, much in the same way they fetishize queer people and/or “exotic” cultures

B) saying that Sherlock can’t be held at all accountable for his actions because he “has no moral compass so he couldn’t have possibly known better”

C) using that as an excuse to say that Sherlock is 100% beyond any reprehension. I have the same issue with e.g. House, when people try to say “oh he’s not an asshole - he has an excuse, he’s a psychopath/ has Asperger’s, so that shitty thing he did was OK.” No, it was still a shitty thing, and it’s still not OK, and he’s still an asshole.

D) not understanding sociopathy at all and assuming diagnostic criteria based on the show. “oh, a sociopath is someone who’s highly analytic, intelligent, and is an asshole?”

E) just to be clear, none of those have any bearing on my interpretation of him as not a sociopath.

in short: he should not be vilified for whatever mental disorder he may or may not have; but he should maybe not be outright lauded and praised and admired for choosing to be an asshole. yes?

This explanation and thoughtful insight into what you were trying to say was not what you originally said. I certainly agree with some of your points that you are making now. Especially regarding the fetishization of any sort of mental disorder. Your original statement was a public statement of a broad generalization that could clearly be taken as insulting by, for instance, an actual fan who may happen to have an anti-social personality disorder.

The point is not the character. He is a fictional character and taking him as a paragon of the disorder is as ridiculous as taking any character as representative of any group of any kind, certainly. And using a disorder as an excuse for behaviour is, agreed, not okay. It can be a reason for behaviour, that is different.
